Laura Edelman, L.Ac.

NYS Certified Acupuncturist
Craniosacral Therapy

Laura Edelman is a Board Certified Licensed Acupuncturist who specializes in women's health issues and pain management. Acupuncture is one of the most important aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine and dates back at least 3000 years. It works with the body's energy to regulate the nervous, immune and musculoskeletal systems and to promote healing. Laura is also versed in Chinese herbal medicine and Craniosacral Therapy, a gentle technique that helps alleviate headaches and back pain.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of hair-thin needles into specific point on the body to regulate the flow of energy. "These points are doorways into the meridian system," she described. "The meridians are pathways of energy throughout the body that connect the internal organ systems. By increasing or decreasing the energy flow, you can greatly affect an area's ability to heal."

The technique has been used to treat virtually any sort of condition. "On any given day I can see anyone from a toddler with a cold to an 80-year-old with arthritis," she said, adding that many of her patients come in for things like stress, anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain. She is also versed in Chinese herbal medicine and Craniosacral Therapy, a gentle technique that helps alleviate headaches and back pain.

Teresa Peppard

NYS Licensed Massage Therapist
Shiatsu
T'ai Chi Chaun
Qi Gong

Teresa Peppard, who was also part of the Center when it began, is a New York State Licensed Massage Therapist and practices Swedish Massage and Connective Tissue Therapy as well as Shiatsu. In addition, Teresa has been teaching Tai Chi Ch’uan in the Hudson Valley region for over 10 years. Drawing on her experience in Tai Chi and bodywork, she explores the affects of movement and sensory awareness on the body and mind with her clients.

Tai Chi is the ancient Chinese martial art practiced for health and well being for hundreds of years. Developed as a means of self-defense, its slow-moving form also yields benefits such as better balance, flexibility and increased energy. Tai Chi can greatly reduce stress; a primary cause of declining health today. Students learn to combine proper body alignment with breathing, relaxation and concentration in a way that increases the flow of vital energy inside the body. The class provides step-by-step instruction in the Yang Style long form, a traditional form that retains the original martial arts applications.

In addition to teaching Tai Chi Chuan , Teresa also teaches qi gong and advanced Tai Chi forms such at Tai Chi fast set, push hands, martial applications and Tai Chi sword and double sticks.

David Haviland

NYS Licensed Master Social Worker

David Haviland traces his success as an individual and family counselor to a unique blend of social work training and professional communication skills. A former award-winning Creative Director at Viacom and CBS, David brought his ability to touch people to an entirely new level when he plunged into the Masters of Social Work program at the State University of New York at Albany. “I already knew how to reach people with my writing and graphics,” said David, “but I wanted to be able to heal people as well.”

New communication skills -- those of listening and speaking with empathy -- soon became critically important. David would hone these skills both at the University and at his internship at Putnam Hospital’s Reed 4 Unit. “I discovered that I was most effective in helping people with depression, anxiety and other emotional issues by providing what they needed most: A kind, attentive ear, and the encouragement that everything was going to be all right.” David’s belief is that far too often, therapists place themselves above and apart from their patients.... almost seeing them as objects to be worked on. “What I try to do is treat each patient with the respect they deserve... helping them to redirect their thought patterns through a powerful cognitive-behavioral formula.”

“For many people, the world can be a cold, painful place, filled with stress and frustration,” says David. “I hope to provide not just a way of coping with all of this... but a warm therapeutic style that helps clients feel cared for and listened to on the road back to happiness and health.”

Martha Garcia

Certified Psychotherapist

Martha Garcia brings over 20 years of experience working with people at the Center. She describes the psychotherapy process as a collaborative venture involving at least two people: the person(s) seeking to resolve life conflicts and improve their quality of life, and the therapist, acting as a guide on the journey of self-understanding.

The journey, taking clients through the emotions, thoughts, reactions, and belief systems that hold them back and keep them from knowing their essential self, leads toward wholeness, and the ability to fully express who they truly are. “I have learned, and continue to learn and apply, a variety of traditional, sometimes little known healing techniques that work at a cellular level of our bodies, seek to reconstruct our being, healing our Spirit, helping the reconnection and relation to others, and that can place us on a path return to our soul and essence,” she said.
